I Need a Holiday

June 14th, 2010

I’ve had a very stressful couple of months and feel that a holiday will find me well rested and rejuvenated. I don’t want the hassle of flying and going through customs – lets face it, sometimes it’s not worth the hassle.

Last time I was on holiday I decided to bring a tub of my favourite sandwich spread back to England. I got stopped, searched and it was confiscated from me. It was sealed and no one had tampered with it yet it was still taken from me as it was seen as a liquid that could be detrimental to people onboard the plane. I’m sure he just wanted the sandwich spread himself which annoyed me. After this I decided that for short holidays it wasn’t worth the hassle.

When I think of holidays in England, I shudder. The thought of being in the middle of a field in a tent soaked to the bone or in a B+B in the middle of no-where makes me feel even worse.

I find going to places that are not only for adults but that are experience holidays make it all the better.

I have booked myself on an experience weekend where I am collected from my 5* hotel and chauffeur driven to a historic country town in a classic car. I can then take in the bistros and restaurants and have a shopping spree. I am then driven back to enjoy the rest of the day in a peaceful adults only hotel.

Enjoying Holiday Travel In America

June 14th, 2010

Traveling for your holidays is very popular these days. Most states in America promote themselves as tourist destinations in some way as they offer travel incentives for their local areas. There are many options for your vacation, everything from theme parks to national parks.

While planning a holiday travel, you need to decide at the onset what you want, for example, do you want to relax on a beach or enjoy roller coasters and water rides. If a good deal on holiday travel is what you want, check out if travel packages are available around your destination. Such packages, which combine airline fares, hotels and car rentals together, are offered by many travel companies, making it a cost-effective as well as convenient deal to go for.

Once you have chosen your vacation type you can begin searching for a destination. Your destination will often be affected by your budget, so this is also a good time to consider that aspect. Of course you can choose a higher priced destination for a shorter time if you choose not to compromise that aspect of your vacation. Use the Internet to search for a variety of destinations, then discuss them amongst your family. Many popular vacation areas can satisfy a variety of vacation desires as they integrate both relaxing on a beach and the fun and excitement that the more youthful members of your family may be searching for.

When you involve your family, and get a early head start holiday travel can be as exciting as it is to plan a vacation. Travel Packages will probably be cheaper with short notice because companies would rather have families occupied in the room instead of the cost of the room sitting empty. Remember the best deals are found when you plan ahead of time as oppose to a shorter time.

Last minute travel deals are often available if your travel plans are flexible. If you are willing to make last minute changes, there is a good possibility that you can travel at a fraction of the cost paid by those with fixed plans. Of course, if money is not a problem, the security of a fixed plan for any type of vacation you want is possible. If luxury is your goal and price is no object then you can go on the vacation of your dreams. You might choose to rent a yacht off the eastern seaboard, or sip the best wines in the vineyards of California.

If you have a reasonable budget, and do a little bit of careful planning, nothing can stop you from enjoying your holiday travel to the hilt. You can satisfy your wildest dreams, be it a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon or having fun and gambling the night away on the Las Vegas strip.

The are many travel incentives to attract tourists with numerous options for activities ranging from visiting national parks to enjoying yourself at a theme park. Involving your family and getting an early start can be exciting when planning your holiday travel. You can decide if you want to relax on a beach, enjoy roller coasters or water rides. Travel packages can combine airline fares, hotels and car rentals together making a cost-effective and convenient deal. Last minute travel deals are often available if your travel plans are flexible. If you are willing to make last minute changes, you may be able to travel at a fraction of the cost.

Preparing Your Holiday Packing List

June 14th, 2010

There are few things as exciting as preparing to travel. There’s a great sense of anticipation as you think about the days ahead of you. But this excitement can occasionally lead to problems. It’s fairly common for people to forget to pack some holiday essentials.

This is certainly easily done. As we become carried away thinking about warm weather and beautiful beaches, we may start to forget about some of the more mundane issues. So how can we avoid problems? A great approach is to write a list of everything that you want to pack. You may do this already. But how effective is this approach for you at the present time?

Many people don’t give enough thought to creating their holiday packing list. One of the most important things is to prepare any such list well in advance. This will give you time to properly think about the items you need and to go out and buy any replacements, where necessary.

A good approach can be to divide up your list into subheadings. Each category might represent a certain type of item that you are wishing to pack. You might, as an example, have one category that highlights all of your essential documents.

When I’m writing such a list, I would tend to include passports, airline tickets, accommodation information, travel insurance documents, medical forms, car hire booking forms and other such paperwork within this category. I can then tick off each item in turn as I pack them.

It’s a really simple process but one that is incredibly effective. You can repeat it for just about anything that you are intending to pack. So you might have a separate category for clothing. There could be another category for entertainment items, such as MP3 players, books and cameras.

In effect, you’re breaking your list down into a collection of smaller lists. This makes it more manageable, ensuring that you provide plenty of detail and reducing the risk of your forgetting something that’s really important to you.

The next time that you’re intending to travel, why not check out this excellent approach to preparing a holiday list? It’s a great way of making sure that you’ll have everything that you need to enjoy your holiday.

Fact Filled Safari Holiday

June 14th, 2010

In the past we have looked at the Order, Perisodactyls.

You will now have a look at the other Order, Artiodactyls, and learn a few field characteristics that will enrich your Safari once you are ready. This is where we meet the swines and the hippopotamus.

In Kenya, the warthog is one of the very common animals of this order. Others include the bush pig, giant forest hogs found in the woodlands of Kenya and other African countries.

On many outings on your safari, it is the warthog that you will meet mostly in the open savannahs. It is one of the amazing creatures especially when you look at their faces. The warts give them an exaggerated appearance of ‘tough’ animals. These warts are very prominent on the males. It is the only pig adapted for savannah habitats and as such it is the commonly spotted hog. You will see them on hot days wallowing in the shallow waters giving them that muddy look.

When feeding, the warthog rests and walks on its calloused carpal joints (wrists or knees). This is a behavior seen only with the warthog that makes the skin tough around the knees. This is the reason why in some old animals this skin has flaking looks due to use with time. Where there are seasonal climatic changes, they are seasonal breeders rutting at the end of the rains.

Usually they give birth to several piglets in a burrow under the ground. Unfortunately (or fortunately) they are preyed upon by a couple of predators including big birds of prey.(one time a martial eagle came down like lightning and grabbed a piglet just next to our van as we watched them and the helpless mother had nothing she could do).

When threatened by the predators, they seek their underground refuge and usually put up a defense especially for the piglets. On a couple of times you will see that when surprised or scared they run for their burrows backwards first. This is a defensive move whereby they usually attack with their teeth with the rest of the body protected in the hole.

The hippopotamus is one of the most interesting creatures. An enigma in itself. One of the most noticeable characteristic is the physical resemblance to the pigs.

There are two species of hippos in the world, but while on your safari in Kenya you will see one of them, the common hippopotamus. The dwarf hippopotamus is found in the lowland forests of West Africa from Guinea to Ivory Coast.

Hippos feed at night on land and during the day they rest in the water. This is the time to digest what they have been eating during the night. Their ‘familiar’ honking enriches the day with the sounds of the African wilds. All this in their age-old natural habitats that man has not yet managed to destroy, but unfortunately on the way.

The hippo’s jaws are often displayed as a ready protection or as a threat to intruders. You must look out for the famous “hippo yawn” during your trip and this calls for some patience when you visit the hippo pools. Usually during the night when feeding, lions and hyenas try their luck on the young calves and this is usually fierce asking for a lot of trouble from the mother. In some cases they succeed but after some fights that can vary from mild to fierce. At times, the display of the huge canines is enough to ward of intruders especially during the day when they rest in shallow waters. The fact that they are most of the times in a group also helps a lot to protect their young ones.

On your Safari with the help of the guide you will be able to interpret more of the behaviors around the hippos and the warthogs as they appear.

Holiday & Travel Guide For Cyprus

June 14th, 2010

Sightseeing. There are plenty of museums around Cyprus to visit, full of Byzantine art. Visit the Tombs of the kings in Paphos or take a trip 25 miles out of Paphos to the Palaeokastro Settlement, a fascinating place where the fortification walls protected the land and seas. Just along the coast in Paphos is the magnificent legendary rock of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. There is a wealth of History and culture to explore on this fascinating Island. Cyprus is well known for its Mythology of Gods and Goddesses, enjoy a walk along the nature trails to settlements and historical sites dating back to 12BC there is plenty for all the family to enjoy. Nothing is too far from the luxury hotels that stand out along its coastline. Limassol is one of the larger cities that has a lovely walk along the coast line where you will reach the castle to take a tour around

Beaches
Cyprus, where east meets west, a beautiful country full of colour, sunshine and culture against the back drop of fabulous mountains. There is plenty to see and do in Cyprus. The beaches are breathtaking white sands and clear seas in the eastern areas and grey sands in the southern areas. After you have trailed along the historical route take a step back and enjoy the wonderful beaches all around the coastline. Relax on the famous Phinikoudes Beach or the golden sands of Kapparis beach

Shopping
Shopping in Cyprus isn’t the best place, but there are plenty of markets and craft shops throughout the Island. The Troodos mountains are a good example for all your quality craft and pottery items as there are numerous shops. If you like more traditional stores selling everything you would find in your local high street stores then Nicosia which is not too far from Paphos is the place to go. It has covered markets to shade you from the baking sun, and every Sunday they have large open markets in Larnaca, the place for local crafts and souvenirs. Lefkara lace can be found in most places. These are beautiful handmade lace items created by the women of Cyprus for centuries.

Eating
There are plenty of quality restaurants serving local and international cuisine to suit all your family needs from fast food and English breakfasts to fine dining. Traditional Cypriot food is seasoned Lamb and fish but this can be quite expensive. Do as the locals do and eat traditional meze consisting of up to 20 small dishes of well seasoned food served one after another. It’s all about taste not size.

Nightlife
The main nightlife in Paphos revolves around the aptly named ‘bar street’ which consists of clubs, bars and restaurants. There is also entertainment in the evening at the various hotels. However, if you are looking for a very lively buzz there is plenty of nightlife in Agia Napa boasting over 20 nightclubs for the party lovers wanting to stay out all night. If you want it a little more toned down Nicosia has plenty of cosmopolitan clubs, but around the beach resorts you will find many of the hotels have regular entertainment for family fun. You will find more than enough of clubs, discos and entertainment in all the resorts to enjoy a good traditional Cypriot night out.

Holiday Travel with Kids

June 14th, 2010

If there were ever two words that went together, they are “holiday” and “travel”. They can be a pain in the neck during the holidays if you travel with kids.

Holiday Travel

I happen to be a big fan of the Christmas televisions shows. I happily admit that I am still a fan of the Grinch, the island of toys and, of course, Rudolf. Alas, one can’t help buy notice none of these shows make any mention of holiday travel. While we occasionally see Santa in his sleigh, he certainly isn’t sitting in a depressing airport lounge waiting for a four hour flight delay to pass.

Holidays are a great time because they give you a chance to loaf. If you’re traveling out of town to a family home, you can anticipate spending a few days of eating too much, sleeping a lot, watching football and pretending to explain gifts to a child while you are really playing with them. Everyone looks forward to these family gatherings.

Nobody looks forward to actually going through the process of traveling to family gatherings. Travel by airplane, and you have to sit in crowded airports, suffer through connecting flights, pray the weather doesn’t act up and, of course, wedge yourself into a seat made for a super model. There is also that moment of apprehension when the plane is loading and you hope not to get stuck to “drunk guy”, “gonna get sick guy”, “cute, hyperactive child” or an insurance salesman. All of these downfalls are multiplied when you travel with your kids.

Being a child is about having fun and exploring your surroundings. Sitting in an airport for 5 hours is not conducive to such things. The old Stapelton Airport in Denver used to have a giant waiting room that was painted in dark red. When the weather acted up, it was like getting a 10 hour preview of hell. As miserable as you might be with delays, your child will be ten times worse off. So, what do you do?

In this age of the gadget, there is always the video game. There problem, however, is there something disturbing about watching a child’s eyes glaze over as he digitally kills monsters, other humans or whatever happens to be on the screen. One has to wonder what society will be like in another 20 years or so when these video game experts come to the forefront.

A better solution to your child’s boredom would be to get them engrossed in something that actually helps their minds grow. Books are great, particularly the latest installment of Harry Potter which is sure to keep them engrossed for a few hours. Another option is to give the writing journals, and tell them to write down things such as their impressions of the trip, all the important things they experienced during 2005 and so on. Both of these options will keep them from being miserable as well as develop a skill other than pressing a button as fast as humanely possible.

Holiday & Travel Guide For the Gambia

June 14th, 2010

Sightseeing

From the Monkey Park, where you can see the bird and plant life of the area, to a mini cruise at sunset along the Gambian river, there are plenty of excursions in the Gambia. Travel along its narrow but beautiful countryside with colour and sunshine all year round. Take a trip out to see the baobab tree; every part of this tree is useful from the fruit, seeds and leaves that are used as ingredients in sauces, beverages and medicines and also for making ropes. Parks and reserves are dotted all around the Gambia. The most famous reserve is in Abuko, approximately 25 kilometres drive from Banjul. The park has been protected since 1916 because it supplies the capital with its drinking water. Have a trip out to some of the local schools and leave a donation so they can prosper in their education.

You could travel to Gambia National Park which is also known as Baboon Island. Unfortunately the river boats are not allowed to stop for you to enter the Island, this is so the monkeys can be left undisturbed, but it is still a great day out and very photographic. Abuko is a paradise for those of you who are bird watchers with over 300 species in this tropical forest. It is a must for all the family to experience its sights and sounds. If you would like to see a diverse variety of cultural items visit the National Museum in Banjul. You will need several hours to see everything but it is well worth a trip there. If you’re quite daring and would like a great experience visit Bakau crocodile park where you can walk among the crocodiles, some are even friendly enough you can have your photo taken stroking one, if you dare.

Eating

Gambia is well known for its fresh sea fish dishes using Barracuda, Atlantic prawns and butter fish. Fish are cooked with vegetable and rice. Try Domoda one of the islands typical dishes. This is meat stewed in peanut puree and served with rice. Chicken Yassa is cooked with lime and rice a delicious tangy dish. Gambia does provide cuisine from all around the world. These are served in luxury hotels and many restaurants in the towns. Fast food is available but not as accessible as most other countries. Outdoor shacks do sell fast food but be careful you may be taking a trip to the hospital afterwards pretty fast too.

Nightlife

In Banjul there is little or no nightlife, if any it will be hotel based, but a short taxi ride will take you to the town of Sennagambia where you can find all the nightlife you would possibly want. The music is varied from place to place playing all types from pop to Reggae and R&B. There are lots of restaurants too, some playing local live music. You can have a good night out if that is what you are looking for on your holiday in the Gambia.

Shopping

There are no designer stores or supermarkets in the Gambia and there is very little shopping in Banjul. There are local markets, selling crafts and beads and some bargains can be had with silver items and beautiful material. Leather belts, hand crafted jewellery and tourist souvenirs are about all you can really purchase in the Gambia.

Ocean Freight Quote – If you move large volumes of cargo to or from the USA, STAT Logistics’ ocean services are the answer. With many differences in service, transit times and cost, it is critical to work with an organization that offers a wide array of options that meet both your service requirements and your transportation budget.
